Our methodology

Why we built this, where the rates come from, and how one earns its place at the top of a board.

Why we built Ratehunter

Most rate sites show you a thin, repetitive slice of the market. They push whatever's paid for, or hide the full list behind a paywall. So you end up hunting for rates, and missing the ones from brands that don't, or can't, advertise as widely.

That's the gap Ratehunter closes. Every publicly available investment rate, in one place, searchable by what you want, where you live, and who it's open to. Better still, you don't have to hunt at all. Tell us the rate you want and when you plan to invest, and we go find it. Sit back, and let us track down the big game.

Where the rates come from

Rates come from a mix of primary sources including official marketing materials, source URLs, regulatory bodies, and direct inquiries with each brand. For each institution we also verify information that helps consumers decide whether to act: who regulates each brand, which insurer protects their deposits, where a brand operates, and who is allowed to join.

What we don't cover yet — and where you can help

Investments are changing all the time, and complete coverage has its edges, so we would rather name them than let a blank space imply something. Many institutions also do not publish or share rates publicly. So, if a rate, an eligibility rule or a deposit-protection detail is wrong, tell us. We'll check it against the source and correct it.

How rankings are decided

Boards rank on the posted rate: highest wins for deposits, lowest for mortgages. Before anything is ranked, the list is filtered to what is attainable for your province and account type. Postal codes narrow it down further where an institution serves only part of a province. Mortgage rates a lender offers only on insured (high-ratio) mortgages are ranked alongside conventional ones and labelled Insured, so a rate priced for a different down-payment position is never mistaken for a conventional posted rate.

Advertising never changes how rates are listed. A sponsored placement is always labelled, always separate, and never alters where an institution sits in a ranked list — set out in full in our advertiser disclosure.

How fresh the data is

Every rate is shown as of the date it was last confirmed, which is listed on each page and institution.

Rates and terms change. Always confirm the current rate, its conditions and its deposit protection directly with the institution before you commit money. Ratehunter publishes rate information, not financial advice, and does not sell the products it ranks.
