Privacy policy

What we collect, why, and how to see, change or delete it.

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Ratehunter compares deposit and mortgage rates from Canadian banks, credit unions and trust companies. You can use every rate page on this site without giving us your name or email address. Apart from the visit information our analytics tools collect (section 2), the only time we collect personal information is when you sign up for rate alerts — and then we collect as little as we can, use it only to send the alerts you asked for, and never sell it.

This policy explains what we collect, why, where it's kept, who helps us handle it, how long we keep it, and how to see, change or delete it. It's written to meet Canada's federal privacy law (PIPEDA), British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act, Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (Law 25), and Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

2. Browsing the site: no account needed

You don't need an account to use Ratehunter, and you never have to give us your name. To understand how people use the site, though, we do use analytics tools that collect information about your visit.

3. What we collect when you sign up for rate alerts

WhatWhy we need it
Your email addressTo send your confirmation email and your alerts.
The first three characters of your postal code (e.g. "V6E"), and the province we work out from themSo we only show rates you can actually get where you live. You type your full postal code, but we keep only the first three characters — the rest is discarded when you submit.
Your hunt criteria — the products, terms and account types you choose, and, only if you enter them, an amount and a maturity or renewal dateTo find the rates that match each hunt, and to remind you ahead of a maturity or renewal.
Your consent record — the exact consent wording you saw, the page you signed up on, and when you subscribed, confirmed, changed your hunts or unsubscribedCanadian anti-spam law requires us to be able to prove you asked for our emails.
A record of emails we've sent you — which email, when, and the delivery provider's message referenceTo avoid sending duplicates and to troubleshoot delivery.

We don't ask for your name, phone number, birth date, income, bank accounts or anything else. Optional fields are optional — leave the amount or date blank and your hunts still work.

When you submit the form, your IP address is checked briefly to stop someone from flooding the form with sign-ups. It's held in memory only and isn't saved with your subscription.

4. How we use it — and how we don't

After you unsubscribe, we send you nothing further.

6. Who helps us handle your information

7. How long we keep it

These deletions run automatically every day.

8. How we protect it

Subscriber data is held in a database that is not reachable from the public website; only Ratehunter's own sign-up service can read or write it. Connections are encrypted. Access is limited to the few people at Ratehunter who need it to run the service. If a breach ever created a real risk of significant harm to you, we'd notify you and the privacy commissioners as the law requires.
