The TFSA, explained
Why hold a GIC in a TFSA?
Every dollar of interest a GIC earns inside a TFSA is tax-free and never counts as income. That makes the TFSA one of the most efficient places to hold a guaranteed rate, especially in a higher tax bracket.
Watch your contribution room
You can only shelter what your accumulated TFSA room allows. Withdrawals free up room again, but not until the following calendar year, so avoid over-contributing.
Liquidity
A GIC locks your money for the term. If you may need the funds sooner, look at a cashable GIC or a TFSA savings account instead — the savings board below stays liquid.
TFSA questions
Is a TFSA the same as a GIC?
No. A TFSA is a registered account; a GIC is one of the investments you can hold inside it, alongside savings, mutual funds and others. This page ranks the best GIC and savings rates available in a TFSA.
Is the interest really tax-free?
Yes. Interest and any growth earned inside a TFSA is never taxed and never has to be reported as income, whether you leave it in or withdraw it.
Can I withdraw early?
From a TFSA savings account, any time. From a GIC, only if it's cashable or redeemable — a non-redeemable GIC in a TFSA locks your funds until maturity, but usually pays a higher rate in exchange.
Does it use up my contribution room?
Buying the GIC uses room equal to what you contribute. Withdrawing at maturity restores that room, but only starting the next calendar year.
